San Gimignano
Leaving Villa Rontondo, we trundled off to San Gimignano, one of the most famous (and popular) of the hilltop cities, known as a city of towers. In many ways it seems unchanged from its medieval origins—other than the shops, the tourists, and the museum of torture.

(above middle & right) We entered Torre Grossa, the tower adjacent to the duomo, and climbed the steps 177 feet to the rooftop viewing platform where we were treated to views of miles of Tuscan countryside.
