San Michele
Although most interments are now handled on the mainland, the cemetery of San Michele which sits on a separate island, still has some burials. Over the gates of the cemetery is a statue that is the symbol of the power of Venice.

Throughout the cemetery there is evidence of visitation—both for new interments and those quite old. Recent interments—two were taking place while we were there--are on a term basis, but many old monuments remain in tribute to Venetians of the past.
