Great cities have icons. For Paris, it's the Eiffel Tower. For London, it's Big Ben. For Sydney, it's the Opera House. Designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, the buidling was completed in 1973 at a cost of $102 million. The project was completed ten years late and over-budget by more than fourteen times. Utzon was pressured to resign while it was under construction. While he received a number of awards for the structure, he never actually saw the completed building.
