Although most interments are now handled on the mainland, the cemetery of San Michele which sits on a separate island, still has some burials. Over the gates of the cemetery is a statue that is the symbol of the power of Venice. | ||

Throughout the cemetery there is evidence of visitation—both for new interments and those quite old. Recent interments—two were taking place while we were there--are on a term basis, but many old monuments remain in tribute to Venetians of the past. | ||
